According to a recent Bernstein Research study, the global sales of the iPad tablet computer in 2011 will result in almost 20 billion U.S. dollars for Apple Inc., the American multinational corporation. Besides, next year, the number of sales of this tablet would be greater than the iPhone sales.
The famous Apple gadget has surpassed all the expectations, since the sales reached nearly 3 million units in the first eighty days (with a sales rate of 4.5 million units per quarter).
The success of the iPad is absolutely incontrovertible, especially if we keep in mind that Apple sold about 1 million iPhones in the first quarter after the launch of this smartphone. And the influence of the iPad in the market is so strong that it is causing an accelerated evolution in the tablets category with the emergence of several competitors (recently, we have seen several launches of new products such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab or the BlackBerry PlayBook). On the other hand, some experts are affirming the iPad is competing directly with another segment: The netbook market.
If this situation continues at the same rhythm, then the iPad will become the fourth-top consumer electronics category following only TVs, smartphones, and notebooks. That’s surprising. Moreover, some analysts consider the iPad as the new consumer electronics product with quicker sales in the history of the world (with exception of the telephones). Even, the adoption of the iPad has been more accelerated than the adoption of other important technological products such as the DVD players whose sales reached 350,000 units during the first twelve months after the launch.
The tablets constitute a products category that can be situated between smartphones and netbooks. They are smaller than the netbooks but many features are similar (although they will become more powerful soon). For this reason, they have begun to affect the sales of netbooks, although the netbooks might find an important niche in emergent markets such as India and China during the coming years. Anyway, the certain thing is that the tablets (and especially the iPad, which is the absolute leader in this field, at least temporarily) have a very promising future in front of them. So, no one should be surprised if, in the near future, Apple launches a new, better, and powerful version of its tablet.
